La Romana, the third most important city in the Dominican Republic, is in the south of the country, and has stunning beaches and an exceptional climate, to the great delight of tourists. Travellers can lounge on Bayahibe Beach, visit Santo Domingo and discover Dominican history, most notably in the village of Altos de Chavón.
Santo Domingo: Organized excursions allow tourists to discover the Old Town, its cathedral and Primada de América, as well as the Alcazar de Colón and historic buildings dating back to the colonial era.
Bayahibe: La Romana and its surrounding areas boast many acclaimed beaches, notably La Romana, Dominicus and Bayahibe in the national park to the east. In addition to white sands, Bayahibe is home to a pretty fishing village. Visitors can also chase starfish in the blue lagoon.
Altos de Chavón: In the valley near La Romana is Altos de Chavón, a reconstruction of a 15th century European village. Today, the cathedral and the amphitheatre are still used and local artists sell their work there. Tourists can also visit the sugarcane fields nearby.
