Unaccompanied minors

If your child is travelling without a parent/guardian (or with a parent/guardian but in a different compartment/cabin on board) please read this section to ensure that they meet the requirements for travelling alone and are fully prepared for their trip.

Minimum 7 days to 7 years inclusively 8 - 11 years inclusively 12 - 17 years inclusively
Must be accompanied, in the same cabin, by another passenger who is 16 years of age or older.

May travel alone, or with an adult travelling in a different cabin, upon the purchase of our Unaccompanied Minor VIP Service. Children under the age of 12 will be charged an adult fare if traveling without a parent / legal guardian in addition to paying the VIP service fee. This service is not available on connecting or codeshare flights, nor on flight to or from Colombia.

May travel alone or with an adult travelling in a different class. We will be pleased to offer assistance to youth passengers travelling alone, however they must be able to travel independently and without Air Transat guardianship.

For peace of mind, you may choose to register your youth traveller in our Unaccompanied Minor VIP Service. In this case, the young traveler will have to pay an adult rate in addition to paying the fee for the VIP service for unaccompanied minors. This service is not available on connecting or codeshare flights, nor on flight to or from Colombia.

All paperwork, identification requirements, services, fees and handling will apply.

Our special VIP Service ensures these young travellers receive the highest quality of service, from check-in all the way to arrival in their destination, including:

  • An escort through the airport processes
  • Standard seat assignment
  • Priority boarding
  • Priority baggage handling
  • Free snacks from our Bistro selection

Please note this service is mandatory. The cost is CA $100 per unaccompanied minor, per direction, payable in advance via our call centre.

At airports outside of Canada, actual amounts may vary and will be charged in the currency used in the departure airport.

Pre-flight checklist

  1. Check in 3 hours prior to flight departure.
You will be required to provide complete information regarding the person who will meet the child at the destination (full name, complete street address, area code and phone number).
  2. A special tag will be attached to your child’s checked luggage to enable easy identification on arrival. We’ll also equip your child with a pouch (containing their travel documents – passport, tickets, customs forms, etc.) to wear around their neck and identify them as an unaccompanied minor.
  3. The parent or guardian accompanying the child to the airport must remain at the airport until the flight is airborne as confirmed by an Air Transat agent.

Service provided beyond the boarding gate

Once in our care, Air Transat personnel watch over your child during their journey. Your child will be boarded in priority ahead of regular boarding and will be introduced to our Flight Director, who will escort them to their seat, introduce them to the Flight Attendant in their section and explain the safety procedures. Cabin crew will pay special attention to your child during the flight, making sure they are comfortable and safe. On flights to and from South destinations (excluding Peru), the U.S. and within Canada, it’s possible to pre-order a meal from the Bistro menu up to 72 hours before the flight.

Arrival checklist

  1. Air Transat ground staff will meet your child at the door of the aircraft and accompany them through any formalities.
  2. Once they have cleared the arrivals area, the Air Transat representative will verify the identity and photo ID of the person who has come to meet your child using the information recorded on the form at departure. If the information does not match, Air Transat will contact the parent/guardian who accompanied your child to the airport at point of origin.
  3. If no one is present to greet your child at the destination, local authorities will be contacted. All subsequent costs incurred (meals, accommodations, etc.) will be subject to reimbursement by the parent or guardian.
