How to find the best beaches in Samana

Is Samana nicer than Punta Cana? In other words, which part of Dominican Republic has the best beaches?

The Dominican Republic is a multifaceted country, but one of the aspects that make it unique is undoubtedly the beauty of its beaches. Among them, the beaches of the peninsula of Samaná stand out. Less crowded than the beaches of Punta Cana, they offer a dream setting for lovers of nature and tranquility.

Where to go in the Samana peninsula and Dominican Republic to avoid ocean sargassum?

Predicting the behavior and trajectory of Sargassum in the Dominican Republic is complex due to a variety of environmental factors. These include ocean currents, winds and water temperature, which can vary widely.

However, the Samana Peninsula, particularly the Samana Bay area, appears to be less prone to mass strandings of Sargassum. This makes it an attractive destination for those who want to enjoy the beaches in peace and quiet. Away from the unpleasant fumes of these brownish algae!

How do you get to the best beach in Samana Dominican Republic?

Most of them can be reached by a combination of driving and hiking. However, the best way to get there is by boat. Departing from Las Terrenas, you can book a French-speaking tour with a guide and target the places you are most interested in. These trips usually stop at Playa Fronton, Playa Rincon and Playita.

Is Samana in the Dominican Republic safe?

Despite its stunning beaches and natural beauty, it’s only natural to ask about safety when planning a trip to Samana. It’s worth noting that Samana is considered one of the safest places on the island of the Dominican Republic.

As with any destination, it’s important to exercise common sense and take basic precautions. This includes avoiding unpopulated areas and unpatrolled beaches after dark, and not flaunting wealth or expensive items.

Playa Rincon

Playa Rincon was named one of the ten most beautiful beaches in the world by Condé Nast Traveler! It boasts 5 kilometers of white sandy coastline bordered by crystal clear waters and a forest of palm trees. In the background are the mountain peaks of Cape Cabrón.

The peculiarity of this destination is its duality. On the one hand, a white sand beach overlooking an ultra-quiet basin, ideal for the proliferation of coral reefs. Thanks to its shallow, calm waters, many tourists stop here for a day of relaxation and snorkeling or diving. On the other hand, the more robust waves are sure to provide some thrills for the more adventurous.

The beach is located in the northern part of the Samana region, just a 15 minute drive from Las Galeras. It is also accessible by boat. Due to its popularity, Playa Rincon is more developed than some of the beaches below. There are a few beach huts for food, equipment rentals and restrooms.

Cayo Levantado

This heavenly island off the coast of Samana is located on the northeast coast of the Dominican Republic. Also nicknamed Bacari Island, it boasts a beach of fine white sand and turquoise waters. A 20-minute boat ride from Samana, Cayo Levantado is a true haven of peace where you can relax and enjoy the breathtaking views of the bay.

And if you think you’ll see hordes of tourists like in Punta Cana or Puerto Plata, think again! You’ll see more pelicans, frigate birds, herons and other ornithological specimens than sunbathers.

The island is also a great starting point for a day trip to Los Haitises national park, especially during whale watching season.

The good news? One of the most luxurious all-inclusive resorts in the Dominican Republic recently opened its doors. So it’s perfectly possible to enjoy the beauty of this seaside resort in peace and quiet, with no rush. All you have to do is stay a few nights on Cayo Levantado!

Playa Fronton

Playa Fronton is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful hidden beaches in the Dominican Republic. It is characterized by a magnificent 90-meter high karst cliff that surrounds a beach of grainy sand dotted with shells. It’s even reminiscent of Thailand…

It’s a coastal treasure of exceptional beauty, deserted and wild, accessible only by boat. This gives it an intimate character, away from the eyes and hordes of tourists. The beach is not only narrow but also very steep. This makes it an ideal spot for diving, as the deeper seabed is only a few palm strokes from the shore. Diving enthusiasts will love it!

Watch your feet though! There are lots of sea urchins in the ocean around here. We recommend that you bring water shoes, especially when getting off the boat.

Getting to Playa Fronton is just a 25 minute motor boat ride from the nearby fishing village of Las Galeras.

Playa Cosón

If the previous beaches were characterized by their seclusion and intimacy, Playa Coson, near Las Terrenas, is more abundant. It is 6 kilometers long worth of ochre sand surrounded by palm trees, wild pigs and colorful shacks serving local delicacies. In fact, this is where you’ll find Luis’ legendary shack, where you can enjoy fresh fish of the day.

Legend also has it that this is the perfect place to watch the sun set. The icing on the cake for lovers of this special spectacle! Especially for visitors who chose to stay at the nearby Playa Coson resort, Viva V Samana by Wyndham.

Playa Morón

Located about 40 minutes from Las Terrenas, Playa Morón is best known for its historical relics… and not just its natural treasures!

Here you can stroll along the wide, wild beach in search of original 18th century French cannons. These were used by Napoleon’s army in 1802. At the time, the French occupied this part of the island of Hispaniola and attempted to crush the slave revolution in neighboring Haiti.

Playa Madama

The sheltered cove of Playa Madama is the perfect setting for a romantic getaway with your significant other. It’s very close to the wild Rincon Beach. With a maximum capacity of 20 people, this tiny white sand beach, about 60 meters long, is dotted with caves that you can visit… provided you bring a flashlight!

The wild beach is only accessible by boat or after a short one-hour hike through the rainforest. There are no services on site… just peace, solitude and the beauty of nature, with a fresh coconut in hand.

It’s best to visit Playa Madama in the morning, as the sun tends to fade towards the end of the day due to the many shady areas.

Playa El Valle

This unspoiled natural setting is sandwiched between two mountains covered in dense tropical vegetation, and the meandering river mouth adds to the beauty of the landscape. It’s a great option to consider when rough seas become too dangerous for swimming. The river then becomes a safe place to enjoy the water without the dangers of stormy weather.

And unlike many of the options mentioned here, this beach is easily accessible in about 30 minutes by car from the main town of Santa Barbara de Samana. There are also ecolodges, several restaurants and small canteens that have retained their authentic character. You’ll even see local fishermen at work!
