Rio de Janeiro Travel Guide

  • Rio de Janeiro: Where every corner pulses with life

Rio de Janeiro is the second-largest city in Brazil and the most visited place in the country; no wonder its nickname is Cidade Maravilhosa (Marvellous City)! Rio de Janeiro has it all – vibrant culture, rainforest-covered mountains you can hike, golden beaches of the Atlantic Ocean, endless energy, and huge rock formations rising from the ground.

Explore Rio de Janeiro

  • Hikes with incredible views

Taking the cable car up Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açucar) is one of the most popular experiences for visitors in Rio. This 400-meter-high granite formation offers one of the best views in the city, especially during sunsets. Right in front of it stands the smaller Morro da Urca, also known as the “first hill on the way to Sugarloaf”. If you enjoy a challenge, climb to Pedra da Gávea. It’s considered the most difficult hike in Rio de Janeiro, but the view you get from the city is worth it. For an easier hike (approximately 45 minutes uphill) with incredible views, explore Morro Dois Irmãos (The Two Brothers), the two iconic peaks seen at Ipanema Beach.

  • Explore emblematic landmarks

The colossal Christ the Redeemer monument on top of Corcovado Mountain can be seen from almost anywhere in Rio. It’s the landmark of the city and the most-visited attraction. The view of the city from the monument is an experience in itself. Visit the Museum of Tomorrow (Museu do Amanhã), easily recognizable thanks to its futurist architecture, seemingly floating over Guanabara Bay. The Selarón Stairs (Escadaria Selarón), with its gorgeous mosaic masterpiece, is an unforgettable stop in Rio. The staircase, which connects the neighborhoods of Santa Teresa and Lapa, features over 2,000 tiles from more than 60 countries. Other architectural gems include the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro, the library Real Gabinete Português de Leitura, and the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (CCBB).

  • Beaches and Nightlife

From the world-famous Copacabana and Ipanema Beaches to lesser-known gems like Prainha, Barra da Tijuca Beach, and Grumari Beach, Rio’s coastline is pure paradise. Ipanema has a more relaxed, family vibe, while Copacabana is where the party meets golden sands. Try surfing at Arpoador Beach, the birthplace of surfing in Rio. Sample the food and drinks from beach vendors, including favourite beachside treats like a frozen bowl of açaí (a superfruit originating from Brazil) and freshly made caipirinhas, the country’s national cocktail made from the local spirit Cachaça. Rio de Janeiro’s nightlife is like no other! No wonder they host the world’s biggest party, the Rio Carnaval. You can also join a neighbourhood “bloco”, which is a massive street party taking place during the pre-carnival and carnival period (February/March). From samba clubs in Lapa to live music in Santa Teresa and Botafogo, and the chic bars in Copacabana and Ipanema, nightlife is everywhere in Rio.

  • Nature and Wildlife

Parque Lage is a public park at the base of Corcovado Mountain, which boasts scenic trails, lush gardens, a mysterious tower, a cave, and an aquarium. The best part of the park is the striking historic and colonial mansion, which houses a gorgeous, pillared courtyard with a turquoise pool and a charming café. Often called the “Heart of Rio”, the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas is a breathtaking lagoon that sits between the beach and the mountains and is surrounded by lush greenery. The lagoon is perfect for cycling, jogging, and watersports, and offers incredible views, especially at sunset. Rio is home to the world’s largest urban rainforest, the Tijuca National Park (Tijuca National Park), where visitors can spot howler monkeys, toucans, capuchin monkeys, and more. Another must-do visit for nature lovers is the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Gardens (Jardim Botânico).
