In search of the distinctive style of Cuban boxing, known for its dance inspired footwork, Sarah brings fellow Basecampers Troy and Rodrigo to Cuba’s foremost Rafael Trejo Gym where they not only meet the Cuban national champion and his world-famous trainer, Nardo Mestre Flores, but Namibia, the country’s only female boxer who, despite the equal status that women have enjoyed since the Cuban Revolution, is still not permitted to box professionally in her country.
Eager to step into the ring themselves, the Basecampers learn the fundamentals in training exercises both in and outside of the ring. But it’s Sarah, through her bond with Namibia, who carries the day and wins the respect of her opponent and the men when she lands a left hook to the head of the more experienced fighter.
Watch Sarah and the Basecampers jump in the ring with some of the world’s finest boxers:
If boxing isn’t your sport, perhaps sport fishing is. There are plenty of great fishing opportunities around Havana and all over the island that attract enthusiasts from around the world. Visit Cuba On The Fly for more information.
