William Chambers Millinery
Gracie and Alanna set off to explore Glasgow’s bustling City Centre to unearth the best high-end shopping outside of London. Their first stop is William Chambers Millinery. Chambers has been turning, and adorning, heads with his avant-garde hats and headpieces since 2008, plucking the fashion accessory from the depths of Scottish history and thrusting it into the modern day. In his elegant boutique, it’s hard to resist the urge to try on every hat, so the bloggers give in to the temptation, with Alanna rocking a purple ostrich- feather piece and Gracie modelling a dainty flowered piece, curiously inspired by Chambers’s own garden.
The girls’ quest for the unique and bold leads them to Timorous Beasties, who’ve made quite a splash in interior home decor. There’s nothing timorous about the owners, self-proclaimed eccentrics, who veer wildly from the traditional to create edgy, provocative and chicly irreverent textiles and wallpapers. Aimed at brightening up any home – and day – Timorous Beasties’ designs reflect a simple world view: plants, animals and society are visually inextricable.
More cool finds await Gracie and Alanna at Abandon Ship, where they meet dry-witted co-owner Duncan Sweeny, who impishly sums up their motto as, “Drink beer, have fun, make clothes.” Started by Sweeny and Richard Davies in 2011 when they found that U.K. streetwear lacked inventive T-shirts, Abandon Ship radiates a skate-culture and playful vibe (it even has an arcade machine in store), with most every design created by its in-house team of whimsical illustrators.
Drygate Brewery Co.
What’s a trip to Scotland without whisky… and beer? This time, the bloggers wet their whistle at Drygate Brewery Co. Described as U.K.’s first experiential craft brewery, Drygate boasts a wide selection of beers, “brewed fearlessly to achieve the exceptional.” As they say in Glasgow, “All roads lead to Drygate!”
