Finding Serenity Living La Pura Vida in Costa Rica

Avatar By Liisa Vexler

Follow Liisa Vexler, a Canadian Transat Expat Expert in Costa Rica, as she brings you on a virtual tour of her favourite places in Tamarindo, on Costa Rica’s northwest Pacific coast.

Tamarindo: From surfer’s paradise to multicultural beach community

Tamarindo began as a surfers’ haven and is now a bustling beach community with people from all over the world. Liisa shows us the main strip in town, which is full of souvenir shops, art galleries, jewelry stores, clothing stores and restaurants showcasing cuisines from around the world. She takes us for a spin down the Tamarindo Estuary, which is a river flowing out into the ocean. The Tamarindo Estuary is a great place for some peace and quiet, where you can spot crocodiles, monkeys, and birds. Finally, she discovers Lola’s at Playa Avellanas, Costa Rica’s best beach bar that has a resident pig and famous surf. From here, walk out onto the beach for the best sunset, surfing and happy hour with the locals.

Liisa’s favourite things to do in Tamarindo, Costa Rica

Lola’s at Playa Avellanas – Known for its famous pizza, Lola’s Beach Bar, is the heart of Avellanas. Lola’s is named after the ‘diva’ of Avellanas, a whimsical pig who used to bathe in the surf of Avellanas. Avellanas is also known for some of Costa Rica’s best surf, drawing people from all over the world.

Tamarindo Estuary – Lined with mangroves, this brackish river flowing into the ocean is full of wildlife. The Tamarindo Estuary is a great place for peace and quiet. And if you’re patient enough you can see an array of animals including flying fish, crocodiles, sharks, monkeys, and many birds.

Tamarindo Beach – Tamarindo Beach is the gateway to your tropical paradise vacation on Costa Rica’s northwest Pacific coast. Activities such as fishing, diving, sailing, surfing, horseback riding and a variety of eco-tours await you.
