Barcelona Tourism: Take in the City from the Top of Mount Tibidabo

Mayssam Samaha By Mayssam Samaha

Many people that visit Europe are drawn to Barcelona, and this magnificent city sees many travellers wandering its streets every year. Barcelona tourism has all of the charms a traveller looks for. The city has a rich history, marvelous architecture and museums, an outstanding culinary tradition, pristine beaches and awe-inspiring mountains. The mountain most worth exploring is Mount Tibidabo, where you’ll feel like a kid again once you reach the Tibidabo Amusement Park at the summit.

Start your journey by catching the old-fashioned blue tram, or “Tramvia Blau”, from the city centre to the halfway point up Mount Tibidabo at Plaça del Doctor Andreu, where there are many restaurants with lovely terraces overlooking Barcelona. This is a good spot to replenish your energy if you’re feeling peckish or in need of a caffeine boost. From there, catch the Funicular del Tibidabo, which climbs through the lush mountainside all the way to the Tibidabo Amusement Park.

Built in 1901, the Tibidabo park is one of the oldest in the world. Most of its 25 rides date back to when it was first opened, lending them a more vintage feel than the white-knuckle rides you may find elsewhere. The park has become a staple of Barcelona tourism, and is known for its mellow vibe, which allows you to spend a day exploring the classic rides at a gentle pace while enjoying unparalleled views of the city and the Mediterranean.

Before heading back down the mountainside, remember to stop by the Temple Expiatori del Sagrat Cor, the magnificent church that stands tall on top of the mountain, to admire its beautiful frescoes.

Hint: Pack a picnic before you leave the city, perhaps with food purchased from Barcelona’s famous Mercat de la Boqueria, and savour it at one of the many picnic areas of the park’s Sky Walk while enjoying the breathtaking view of the city below.
