Our policy on masks

As part of our Traveller Care health and safety program, wearing a mask is mandatory at several stages of your trip. This measure aims to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 when the recommended social distancing cannot be respected, and thus ensures the safety of our passengers and employees.

You are, therefore, required to wear a mask:

    • At check-in;
    • During boarding;
    • Throughout your flight (except during drinking/eating or upon request of an agent or crew member);
    • During deplaning;
    • During transfers (for those who purchased packages and/or excursions).

    You will, most likely, have to wear a mask upon arrival at the airport. Be sure to check the requirements of your departure and arrival airports.

Exempt from this requirement are:

  • Children under the age of two.
  • Children between the ages of 2 and 5 who cannot tolerate wearing a face covering, provided the adult responsible ensures a face covering is readily available to the child prior to boarding the flight. This exemption is not applicable on flights to and from the U.S.
  • Passengers with hearing impairment (or who interact with people who use lip-reading to communicate) are allowed to wear masks partly made of transparent material that permits lip reading, as long as the rest of the mask is made of multiple layers of tightly woven materials such as cotton or linen and that there is a tight seal between the transparent material and the rest of the mask.
  • Passengers with an underlying medical condition that prevents them from wearing a mask. If passengers do suffer from such a medical condition, they must:
    • Contact us as early as possible, either before booking or at the time of their booking. We require at least 48 hours’ notice to evaluate their needs and make the necessary arrangements. We will do our best to assist and accommodate them within that time frame.
    • Provide a medical certificate or a completed Air Transat Mask Exemption Form certifying that they are unable to wear a face mask for a medical reason at least 48 hours prior to departure. The medical certificate for Mask Exemption Form must be signed by the physician no more than 30 days from the date of travel (first flight segment of the trip).
    • Optional - Bring the medical certificate or the completed Air Transat Mask Exemption Form on the day of the flight and present it at the check-in and/or boarding counter.
    • For flights departing from Canada, passengers eligible for a mask exemption must also have in their possession proof of a negative COVID-19 screening test (PCR or antigen), performed less than 72 hours prior to departure to ensure the safety of our employees and of other travellers.
    • Limit moving about on board the plane to physiological needs.
    • Wear a mask when moving about on the plane (if their medical condition allows).
    • Be the first to board the plane and the last to get off.

What is considered an adequate mask:

  • Accepted:

    • Medical mask
    • Non-medical masks must meet the following criteria:
      • Made of multiple layers of tightly woven fabric (such as cotton or linen)
      • Be large enough to completely cover your mouth, nose and chin without gaping
      • Have no tears or holes
      • Must be securely attached to your head with ties or ear loops and stay in place
      • Must allow for easy breathing
  • Not accepted:

    • Mask with exhalation valve
    • Scarf or bandana
    • Mask made of plastic sheeting, non-breathable material or material that easily falls apart
    • Face shield only (without mask)
  • ü Failure to comply with these requirements will be considered misconduct that may result in sanctions and/or denial of boarding.
