Accessibility, Special needs and Medical Equipment

Air Transat will handle passenger mobility aids, wheelchairs and scooters with priority and free of charge. If necessary, Air Transat will remove any cargo or other baggage from the cargo hold to accommodate a person with disabilities’ mobility aid.

Your compact mobility aid (e.g., cane, walker) can be taken on board at no extra cost and will be safely stowed. If your compact mobility aid does not meet the specifications for carry-on luggage, we will gladly transport it as part of your checked luggage, free of charge. You don't need to make any prior arrangements before your trip.

Battery-powered mobility aids must be charged and stored vertically. While most mobility aids can be transported on our aircraft, the following restrictions regarding cargo hold doors and weight will apply.

Advanced notice is strongly recommended to ensure that appropriate arrangements are made to handle your aid with utmost care. If your device exceeds the indicated measurements, you may still complete the form. Our Request team will then reach out to discuss your specific needs and available options. For your comfort and peace of mind, please arrive at the airport at least three hours before your scheduled departure. This will allow us to handle your equipment safely and provide you with the most pleasant experience.

Air Transat will not be able to accept certain types of electrically powered vehicles that are not classified as mobility aids. For more information, please consult our dangerous goods and prohibited items section. Will open in a separate browser window

Batteries are classified as dangerous goods for air transport and strict safety rules apply to air travel with a battery or battery-powered equipment, including motorized mobility aids. We must ensure that all batteries comply with current safety standards to guarantee your safety and that of all passengers. Spare lithium or lithium-ion batteries must be carried in your hand luggage. Your carry-on should not exceed 23 x 40 x 55 cm (9 x 15.5 x 21.5 in), including wheels and handles.

Wheelchairs and mobility aids powered by lithium-ion batteries must meet the following conditions:

• The batteries must be removed and placed in individual protective bags for transport in the cabin.
• The wheelchair or mobility aid can then be transported without restriction as checked baggage.
• The battery terminals must be protected against short circuits, for example by covering the exposed terminals with tape.
• Batteries will not be accepted as checked baggage.

Air Transat reserves the right to refuse to transport a person with disabilities’ mobility aid if it would jeopardize aircraft worthiness. If a passenger’s mobility aid is refused on a flight, Air Transat will at the time of refusal inform the passenger of the reasons for the refusal and, not later than 10 days after the refusal, provide the person with a written notice setting out the reasons for the refusal.

We will do everything possible to ensure that your mobility aid is transported with care to avoid any damage, or loss and to make it available as quickly as possible upon your arrival. Despite our best efforts, there are times when mobility aids may be damaged or their delivery delayed. If you notice any damage to your mobility aid when you arrive at your destination, please fill out a report and inform the Air Transat representatives at your arrival airport immediately. If your mobility aid is damaged or delayed, we will provide you with a temporary replacement. We will arrange for your mobility aid to be repaired or replaced swiftly by the provider of your choice. Additionally, we will cover any expenses you incur due to the damage or delay of your mobility aid without applying any maximum statutory liability amounts. In the event that your mobility aid is damaged or lost, we assure you that it will be replaced with an equivalent model. The maximum liability amount established by the Montreal Convention will not be applicable.

A person with a disability who uses a mobility aid is entitled to make a special declaration of interest under Article 22 of the Montreal convention, that sets out the monetary value of the mobility aid and a description of its identifying features. Special declarations of interest may be made anytime from the moment of reservation until Air Transat assumes control of the mobility aid for stowage in the baggage compartment.

On request, we will do everything we can to assign you the most appropriate seat in our cabin, that meets your individual need.

Please contact our Special Request team via form Will open in a separate browser window and in the subject select: "reserve my seat". Please submit the form at least 48 hours before your departure to request:

• An adapted seat, such as one with a movable armrest, additional floor space for a service animal, or located near a washroom or an emergency exit.
• An additional seat or extra space, depending on your specific needs.

The seat selection fees may be waived and you may be asked to provide a medical letter supporting your request.

We highly recommend you purchase 2 Economy Class seats with the armrest between the seats placed in the vertical position — a seatbelt extension will be available, and the cabin crew will provide you with assistance during boarding.

Please note that extension seatbelts are not available on emergency exit seats. Bulkhead seating and emergency exit rows are not recommended as these seats have fixed armrests that narrow the available seating area.

Air Transat will accept the determination of a person with a disability as to their self-reliance. Some travellers may require a support person to travel, and this will be determined by the traveller’s own individual circumstances.

Air Transat will, on the request of a person with a disability, accept a support person, if the passenger with the disability, needs assistance or is unable to do any of the following:

• Assistance with eating, taking medication or using the washroom;
• Assistance with transferring to and from a passenger seat;
• Assistance with orientation or communication;
• Responding in event of emergency (including : fastening a seatbelt, using an oxygen mask);
• Assistance with evacuating the aircraft in an emergency situation
• Assistance with understanding and following safety directions provided by the crew

If a local medical professional, your attending physician, or Air Transat’s medical support unit Medlink determines that one of the tasks mentioned above cannot be performed independently, Air Transat may require the presence of a support person as a condition of travel. These tasks cannot be carried out by Air Transat crew members. If you wish to travel alone despite this recommendation, the final decision will rest with our Director of Cabin Safety, in consultation with the medical team. If a support person is required for these reasons, standard fees and charges will apply.

Air Transat will require the person with a disability requesting to travel with a support person to:

• Contact us as early as possible, either before booking or at the time of booking. We require at least 48 hours notice in order to review documents and arrange adjacent seating. We will make every effort to assist and accommodate within that time frame.

Air Transat will:

• Review required documentation within 48 hours of receipt and provide a written approval or denial with reasoning. Note that final approval may also be based on observations by the airport personnel.
• Upon request, we can retain an electronic copy of the documents for a period of 36 months to facilitate future travel.
• Arrange for the fare refund upon approval of the One person one fare request, if applicable.

You may be eligible for the One Person One Fare program if:

• You require a support person who meets the criteria established by Air Transat.
• You need an additional seat due to a disability that affects your ability to use a single seat comfortably or safely.
• You require assistance from a personal care attendant, sign language interpreter, or visual support guide.

Once eligibility is confirmed, the following fees and charges will apply:

Flights within Canada

Air Transat is pleased to offer complimentary air fare* for support persons travelling with a person with a disability who cannot otherwise travel on his or her own. In addition, we will provide complimentary seat selection for both the support person and the person with the disability. * Taxes must be paid by the passenger.

Transborder and International flights

Air Transat will provide complimentary seat selection for both the support person and the person with the disability.

Limitations

• The One Person One Fare policy only applies to domestic flights within Canada.
• No extra seats are provided for service animals or equipment.

Only dogs are accepted as service or support animals for passengers with disabilities. Your animal must remain under your control, on a leash, and wearing a harness at all times. If disruptive behavior occurs, adjustments may be requested, and in some cases, boarding may be denied.

Passengers are solely responsible for verifying the country-specific exit and entry restrictions on travelling with animals and for ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements. Please consult all requirements and restrictions here. Will open in a separate browser window

A service dog must be individually trained, through in-person instruction by a qualified professional or specialized organization, to perform specific tasks that support and enhance the daily life of a person with a disability.

You must provide, before your departure, a piece of identification or an official document issued by an organization or professional qualified in-service dog training. This document must confirm your identity and certify that your dog has been specifically trained to perform one or more tasks intended to assist with your disability-related needs.

Service dogs weighing up to 12 kg may travel comfortably at your feet or on your lap, depending on what suits them best.

For dogs weighing more than 12 kg, we ensure they have enough space to lie down at your feet. If needed, the floor space of the adjacent seat will also be made available to support both your comfort and your dog’s well-being. If you do not have sufficient floor space for your service dog to lie down at your feet, an adjacent seat will be provided to ensure the necessary space is available.

Please note that, for safety reasons, service dogs cannot be placed in emergency exit rows or occupy an empty seat.

An emotional support dog is an animal that provides comfort and security to individuals living with psychological or emotional challenges. Unlike service dogs, emotional support dogs are not trained to perform specific tasks aimed at promoting the autonomy of a person with a disability. Instead, their role is based on their calming presence, which can significantly contribute to the emotional well-being of the person they accompany.

Emotional support dogs must receive prior approval from Air Transat’s Special Requests Department. Dogs that have not been pre-approved will not be accepted for transport at the airport. Additionally, your dog must be at least 24 weeks old to travel. This service is not available on codeshare flights or as part of vacation packages.

Emotional support dogs weighing up to 12 kg may travel at your feet or on your lap.

For dogs weighing more than 12 kg, additional floor space in front of the adjacent seat must be pre-purchased, along with an extra ticket, to ensure their comfort and safety on board.

Please note that, for safety reasons, emotional support dogs cannot be placed in emergency exit rows or occupy an empty seat.

Although Air Transat does not serve products containing peanuts, we cannot guarantee an allergen-free environment on board, as meals are prepared by an external supplier and other passengers may bring their own food.

We recommend that passengers with severe food allergies bring their own snacks and meals for the flight, along with any essential medications like an EpiPen.

If you have a severe allergy, please contact our Special Request team at least 48 hours prior to your departure Will open in a separate browser window and in the subject select :"Other specific needs" as the subject of your request, and describe your allergy in the "Comments" section. This information helps us better respond to your needs and ensure your comfort on board.

To help reduce the risk of allergen exposure and provide you with a safer environment, we have implemented the following measures:

• Priority boarding: You may board the aircraft before other passengers to clean your seat yourself and help eliminate any potential allergens.
• A buffer zone can be established around a passenger without assigning a specific seat. Passengers in this area may be relocated if necessary.
• Notification of nearby passengers: Passengers seated in the same row as you will be informed that someone with a severe allergy is nearby (without identifying you) and will be asked to refrain from consuming or using products containing the relevant allergen.
• On request, we can provide the list of ingredients of the meals and snacks served on board.

If you wish to use a portable oxygen concentrator on an Air Transat flight, please ask your physician to complete the Air Transat medical form The PDF file will open in a separate browser window. within 30 days before your departure and return it to us at least 48 hours before your flight. Without this step, you may not be allowed to board, and some services may not be available on short notice. The device must have a manufacturer’s label confirming it meets FAA requirements for in-flight use and transport. One of the two documents is required: either the FAA sticker or the list.

All medical devices must be independently powered. Spare lithium or lithium-ion batteries are allowed only in carry-on baggage (maximum dimensions: 40 cm in length, 23 cm in width and 55 cm in height.) These batteries must comply with safety regulations and be limited to the quantity required for the duration of the flight.

We strongly recommend reviewing the list of restricted and prohibited items Will open in a separate browser window for detailed information on what can be transported in carry-on or checked baggage, the types and quantities of batteries allowed.

If you wish to use a supplemental medical oxygen on an Air Transat flight, please ask your physician to complete the Air Transat medical form The PDF file will open in a separate browser window. within 30 days before your departure and return it to us at least 48 hours before your flight. Without this step, you may not be allowed to board, and some services may not be available on short notice. Our oxygen supplier is VitalAire. Our MediPak is equipped with "D" cylinder model 390 I. This type of oxygen machine can be used occasionally or on a continuous flow during the flight.

Oxygen is not available on code-share flights or flights operated by partner airlines. Please contact us for rates and charges. Because your medical oxygen supply is based on your doctor’s orders, we are unable to provide a refund for unused supplies. Bulkhead and emergency exit seats are not available for passengers using supplemental oxygen. You may bring your own empty bottle, provided it is securely packed and transported either in your cabin baggage if it meets the permitted dimensions, or in your checked baggage.

All medical equipment is accepted as carry-on baggage provided it complies with the authorized cabin baggage dimensions: 23 x 40 x 55 cm (9 x 15.5 x 21.5 in). If your equipment includes batteries or if you require an additional baggage allowance for medical purposes, please complete the 'Special Requests and Reduced Mobility' form Will open in a separate browser window at least 48 hours before departure. If you want to use any type of customized seat insert, restraint device or support device, or those who are unable to use a standard seat belt or an aircraft seat in an upright position please complete the 'Special Requests and Reduced Mobility' form Will open in a separate browser window at least 48 hours before departure. Select 'Other special needs' and specify your requirements in the comments section.

Only car seats that are approved by Transport Canada or the FAA are automatically accepted on board. Please note that the use of knee defenders or any similar devices that restrict seat recline is strictly prohibited on Air Transat flights and those operated by our partner airlines.

A CPAP machine will be accepted as carry-on baggage if it respects authorized dimensions (23 x 40 x 55 cm (9 x 15.5 x 21.5 in). Due to the excess weight of these machines, we ask that you limit your other carry-on items to the minimum that is required for your personal needs during flight.

Please note that your medical equipment must be equipped with an independent power source (i.e., battery-powered) should you wish to use it during your flight. A limited quantity of distilled water used by this device is exempt from the liquid restrictions for carry-on baggage. We recommend that passengers carry supporting documentation from their doctor to facilitate security screening.

EpiPens and hypodermic needles are permitted in carry-on baggage for personal medical use. The needle must have its protective cap in place and must be accompanied by the corresponding medication in its original, clearly labeled container or by a signed certificate from a licensed physician. No prior arrangements are required for transporting these items.

If a passenger has been fitted with a plaster cast, a medical note will be required to confirm the date and time of the fitting. The passenger will then have to carry that document at all times.

• A passenger who has been fitted with a cast within the last 24 hours will not be permitted to fly.
• If the fitting was within the last 24 to 48 hours, the passenger will be permitted to fly on flights of less than 2 hours.
• If more than 48 hours have passed since the fitting, there are no restrictions on the flying time.

A passenger travelling with a plaster cast is not permitted to occupy an emergency exit seat.

Air Transat aircraft are not equipped to transport passengers on stretchers.

Air Transat may require that a person complete a medical information form or provide medical attestations as to their fitness to fly alone or accompanied in namely, any of the following circumstances, all relating to the safety of the person in question, other passengers and the crew members.

• The person is unable to understand or respond to safety directions from the crew because of a mental or cognitive disability
• The person is unable to establish communication with the crew in order to receive safety information, instruction or evacuation directives because of both hearing and vision impairments
• The person appears not to be able to care for someone else in their care during the flight including children or others requiring assistance
• The person has or appears to have a communicable disease that could represent a risk to other passengers
• The person lives with a respiratory or cardiac condition that may require additional precautions during the flight
• The person has recently experienced a serious health issue, such as a stroke or severe anemia
• The person has undergone surgery within the two weeks prior to the flight
• The person experienced from thrombophlebitis (blood clots) within the two weeks prior to departure
• The person suffered a medical emergency on a previous flight or at the airport which required medical intervention

The lack of responsiveness of a passenger can pose a potential risk to this person as well as to other passengers and crew members. Therefore, passengers that are unconscious or that present a low level of responsiveness may be denied boarding. In order to minimise the risk posed to passengers and crew members, without unduly affecting passengers that present certain conditions that may result in symptoms or behaviours that appear to be akin to unresponsiveness, Air Transat has adopted the following assessment tool.

Air Transat works with MedLink, an emergency telemedicine service that enables crewmembers (and ground personnel) to contact an emergency physician at all times. The physician assesses the medical situation and recommends a plan of care. Defibrillators are also on board all of our aircraft; our crew is fully trained in the use of this equipment.

As our top priority is the safety and wellbeing of our passengers and crew members, Air Transat reserves the right to refuse boarding to a passenger that could be at personal risk or a risk to others. If a passenger is refused transportation on a flight, Air Transat will at the time of refusal inform the passenger of the reasons for the refusal and, not later than 10 days after the refusal, provide the person with a written notice setting out the reasons for the refusal.

• Ensure that the required assistance has been noted on the passenger's file, with only the pertinent information needed by our team
• Ensure written confirmation of the services is visible on the itinerary that is issued to the passenger and, if the service is confirmed only after the itinerary is issued, provide, without delay, a written confirmation of said service
• Arrange for an appropriate seat if needed
• To assist in planning a trip, provide information about the on-board dimensions of our seats, aisles and lavatories
• On request of the person with a disability, retain an electronic copy of the medical documents for a period of 36 months to facilitate future travel with Air Transat

• Check-in registration
• Advancing to the front of the line if needed
• Security screening
• Moving to the boarding area
• Transferring between mobility aids (if applicable)
• Priority boarding or assistance boarding after other passengers if the person needing assistance arrives at the boarding area after end of priority boarding

• Stow and retrieve carry-on items
• Safely store walkers or manual folding wheelchairs (if allowed) and we will remove any cargo or other baggage from storage to accommodate the mobility aid
• Transfer from the mobility aid to the seat
• Describe the aircraft layout, including washrooms, exits, and seat controls (for visually impaired passengers)
• Provide an individualized safety briefing and demonstration
• Assist with accessing onboard entertainment content
• Provide an onboard wheelchair

• Allow access to the most spacious washroom
• Assist in moving between your seat and the washroom, including transfers to an on-board wheelchair
• Help with meals by opening packages, identifying food items, and cutting large portions
• Periodically check on your needs and well-being during the flight

Our aircraft are equipped with accessible lavatories designed to be operated with minimal effort. You must be able to use them independently or with assistance from your support person. If you are traveling with your own medical equipment, please be aware that you need to be self-sufficient or accompanied by a support person, as our crew members are unable to handle personal medical equipment.

• Provide a waiting area close to staff members who are ready to assist you
• Conduct regular check-ups to inquire about your needs and attend to them, especially if they relate to the services mentioned above

• Disembarkation and passing through border controls
• Unpacking and reassembling personal mobility aids, if necessary
• Delivering and transferring the mobility aid to the aircraft door (when facilities or customs regulations allow) or as soon as possible
• Retrieving checked baggage
• Moving to the general public area
• Reaching a location where terminal staff can provide assistance to the curbside area
• Meeting a representative from another airline for a connecting flight within the same terminal
