Explore Liberia

  • Liberia, the white city

Nicknamed “the white city” in the colonial era, Liberia is experiencing a growth spurt. This typical Costa Rican city is very dynamic, but it’s for its proximity to the area’s lakes, volcanoes, forests and grottos, and its 300 km of coasts and beaches that tourists seek it out.

  • A volcano and suspension bridges

The Arenal Volcano, which is still active, is a few kilometres from Liberia. Its hot springs are very pleasant and its craters are worth seeing. Another must-see: Monte Verde’s suspension bridges—fantastic for observing the rain and cloud forests from above.

  • National parks

Near Liberia is the Costa Rica Parque Nacional Palo Verde, a birdwatchers’ paradise. In Rincón de la Vieja, the craters and sulphurous volcanic springs are a must-see. The lush forests of the park are strewn with walking paths. The elevated altitude provides a cool climate—a lovely contrast to the heat of the beaches.

  • A beach for everyone

Swimming, diving, surfing, windsurfing—the choices are nearly endless in the area around Liberia! Each beach has its advantages: Playa Hermosa is quiet, perfect for scuba diving or snorkelling. Playa del Coco is livelier. Playa Flamingo is posh. Playa Conchal is picturesque with its white sand, its rocks and its turquoise water. Playa Tamarindo is very popular among surfers, in addition to having excellent restaurants and a wild nightlife.
